Hungarian Meteorological Service

Gilice tér, 39
H – 1181 Budapest

Hungarian Meteorological Service (HMS) is the national meteorological organization of Hungary, member of the World Meteorological Organization. It was established in 1870. Its headquarter is located in Budapest.

HMS operates a nationwide observation network, provides weather forecasts on different time scales for different users from aviation to the general public and performs research and development in the selected fields of atmospheric science. These activities are supported by robust telecommunication and computing systems. The 270 employees work for four divisions: management and administration, Division for Telecommunication and Informatics, Division for Weather Forecast and Climate, Division for Observations
(http://www.met.hu/omsz.php?almenu_id=omsz&pid=about&pri=0&mpx=0).

Department for the Analysis of Atmospheric Environment is part of the Division for Observations (http://omsz.met.hu/en/hmshp.php). Among others, it operates the background air pollution monitoring network of Hungary monitoring the chemical composition of air and precipitation water in the unpolluted regions of the country.

Monitoring of atmospheric carbon dioxide was started in 1981 resulting in one of the longest data series in Europe. Intensive research in this field started in early 1990s when a tall tower monitoring site was established in West Hungary. In addition to the monitoring of the vertical concentration profile of carbon dioxide up to 115 m above the ground, in close cooperation with the Department of Meteorology, Eötvös Lorand University (Budapest), the measurement of the local (grass) and regional scale (mixed vegetation) surface-atmosphere carbon exchange was also started in the late 1990s. Significant part of these research and monitoring programs have been performed in international cooperations (bilateral and European Union projects).

By now the research programs have also been extended to other greenhouse gases and the monitoring activity also includes aircraft measurements above the tall tower monitoring site (http://nimbus.elte.hu/hhs/).
